Toilet trouble

Leaking, clogged & running toilet repair

A toilet that won’t stop running can waste hundreds of gallons a day, and one that leaks at the base can rot the floor. We find what’s actually wrong and fix it right the first time.

Figure out which problem you have

Running, leaking, and clogged toilets are three different problems with three different fixes. Here’s how to tell which one you’ve got.

For a slow leak you can’t see, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper is leaking.

  • Runs or refills on its own: flapper or fill valve
  • Water on the floor at the base: wax ring or flange
  • Drips at the tank bolts or supply line: worn fittings
  • Weak flush or frequent backups: a clog or a venting problem
What we do

The repairs we do most

01

Running toilets

We replace the flapper, fill valve, or flush valve and set the water level so it stops topping itself off.

02

Leaks at the base

We pull the toilet, replace the wax ring, repair the flange if it’s cracked, and reset it level.

03

Stubborn clogs

If a plunger won’t do it, we use a toilet auger. If it keeps coming back, we check the line past the toilet.

04

Tank and supply leaks

New tank bolts and gaskets, a new supply line, and a shutoff valve that actually turns.

“Fast, friendly and knowledgeable. To my pleasant surprise, they arrived much earlier than I expected to fix a broken pipe that was flooding my utility room.”

Toilet repair FAQ

Why does my toilet keep running?

Most of the time the flapper isn’t sealing, or the fill valve is set too high and water spills into the overflow tube. Both are inexpensive parts.

Is a little water around the base a big deal?

Yes. It usually means the wax seal under the toilet has failed, and some of that water is going into the floor. The sooner it gets reset, the less subfloor you end up replacing.

What do I do if the toilet is about to overflow?

Take the lid off the tank and push the flapper down to stop the water, then turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise to shut it off. Don’t flush again until the clog is cleared.

Can I pour chemical drain cleaner in a toilet?

We would skip it. It rarely clears a toilet clog, it can damage older pipes, and it makes the job unsafe for whoever has to plunge or auger it afterward.
