Common floor drain problems

Floor drains collect lint, dirt, and whatever gets swept toward them. Over time it builds up in the trap and slows the drain until a spill pools instead of draining.

A floor drain that smells like sewer usually has a dry trap. The water in it evaporates when the drain isn’t used, and gas comes straight up. Pouring a bucket of water in it every few weeks fixes that.

  • Water pooling instead of draining
  • Sewer smell in the laundry or utility room
  • Water coming up through the drain
  • Leaks from the washer or water heater reaching the drain
What we do

What we do

01

Drain cleaning

We clear the trap and the line past it so the drain takes water as fast as it should.

02

Smell fixes

Dry traps, missing covers, and broken trap seals fixed so sewer gas stays in the pipe.

03

Leak tracing

Water on the floor and no idea where it’s from? We check the washer, the water heater, the supply lines, and the slab.

04

Backups

Water coming up through a floor drain usually means a main line problem. We clear it and find the cause.

“They were very prompt, and educated us on all the options without any upsell, did a superb job on the installation, all at a very fair price.”

Floor drain FAQ

Why does my floor drain smell?

Usually the trap has dried out. Pour a gallon of water in it. If it sits unused for long stretches, a little mineral oil on top slows the evaporation.

Water came up through my floor drain. Is that serious?

It means water from somewhere else in the house couldn’t get out through the main line. Stop using water and call us, because the next thing to back up might be a toilet or a tub.

Should a laundry room have a floor drain?

It isn’t required in every house, but it’s good protection if the washer or water heater ever leaks. We can tell you whether adding one is practical where you are.

Do you clean floor drains in businesses?

Yes. We clean floor drains in restaurants, shops, and utility rooms, and we can set up regular cleaning for drains that see heavy use.
