When a disposal is done

A jam is a fix. A tripped reset button is a fix. A leak from the bottom of the unit isn’t, because it means the inside has corroded through.

Most disposals last somewhere around 8 to 15 years, depending on how hard they work. If yours is older and acting up, replacing it usually costs less than chasing repairs.

  • Leaking from the bottom of the housing
  • Humming with no grinding, even after clearing a jam
  • Water backing up in the sink while it runs
  • Tripping the reset button every time it runs
What we do

Disposal work we do

01

Jam clearing

We free the grinding plate, pull out whatever’s stuck, and check that the motor and the reset are working.

02

Leak repair

Leaks at the sink flange, the drain elbow, or the dishwasher connection get new gaskets or putty and a test run.

03

Replacements

Same mount or a new one, sized for your household. The old unit leaves with us.

04

New installs

Adding a disposal? We tie it into the drain and the dishwasher properly. If there’s no outlet under the sink, we’ll tell you before we start.

“Fast, friendly and knowledgeable. To my pleasant surprise, they arrived much earlier than I expected to fix a broken pipe that was flooding my utility room.”

Garbage disposal FAQ

My disposal hums but won't turn. What do I do?

Turn it off at the switch first. Put the hex wrench in the socket on the bottom and work it back and forth until the plate moves freely, then push the red reset button.

What shouldn't go in a disposal?

Grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, rice, pasta, potato peels, and stringy things like celery and corn husks. Bones and fruit pits can jam it too.

What size disposal do I need?

A 1/2 horsepower unit works for light use. Most families do better with 3/4 horsepower, which grinds faster and jams less.

Why did my dishwasher stop draining after a new disposal?

The knockout plug inside the disposal’s dishwasher inlet probably wasn’t removed. It’s a common install mistake, and an easy fix.
