Why storm drains clog
Storm drains take in everything that washes off a parking lot: sand, leaves, trash, and silt. It settles in the catch basin and the line until an ordinary rain backs up into the lot.
The best time to have them cleaned is before hurricane season, not during the first big storm.
- Standing water in the lot after rain
- Water near the entrance or the loading dock
- Debris piled on or in the grates
- Catch basins filled with sand or silt

Storm drain FAQ
How often should storm drains be cleaned?
Most commercial properties do well with a yearly cleaning, ideally in late spring before hurricane season. Lots with lots of sand or trees may need it more often.
Is a storm drain the same as the sewer?
No. Storm drains carry rainwater, usually untreated, to ditches, ponds, and eventually the bayous and the bay. Nothing but rain should go into them.
Who maintains the storm drains on my property?
Drains on private property are usually the owner’s responsibility. Drains in the street belong to the city or the county.
Can you help after a flood?
Yes. After a heavy storm we can clear the lines and check for damage so the next rain doesn’t do the same thing.
