What a backflow preventer actually does
When pressure in the city main drops (a water main breaks, or the fire department opens a hydrant down the street), water inside your building can get pulled backward into the public supply. In a restaurant that might be dish chemicals. At an office park it might be irrigation water sitting in the lawn lines.
A backflow preventer is a set of check valves that only lets water go one way. The springs and rubber parts inside wear out, so the assembly gets tested every year to prove it still holds.
- Reduced pressure zone (RPZ) assemblies
- Double check valve assemblies
- Pressure vacuum breakers on irrigation
- New assemblies for build-outs and remodels
Testing, repairs, and new installs
One call covers the yearly test and anything it turns up.
Annual testing
We test the assembly with a calibrated gauge kit, write down the readings, and send the report to your utility by the due date.
Repairs & rebuilds
Most failed tests come down to a worn check, a tired spring, or debris in the relief valve. When we can, we rebuild it on the spot and retest.
New installs
Opening a restaurant or adding irrigation? We size and install the right assembly for the hazard, with the shutoffs and drain the code calls for.
Scheduling around you
A test means a short water shutoff. We book it before you open or after you close, so customers never notice.
“They got the repair done right in record time the first time, but also was friendly, knowledgeable and went above and beyond.”
Backflow testing FAQ
Got a letter from the utility and not sure what it means? Read us the due date and the device type and we’ll take it from there.
How often does a backflow preventer need testing?
Once a year for most commercial properties, plus right after it’s installed or repaired. Your water utility sets the schedule and usually mails a reminder when you’re due.
What happens if the test fails?
The assembly gets repaired and retested before the report goes in. Most fixes are new rubber parts or springs, and we can often handle them on the same visit. If the unit is too far gone, we’ll quote a replacement first.
Which businesses need one?
Any property where something could get back into the drinking water: restaurants, medical and dental offices, car washes, salons, and buildings with irrigation, boilers, or chemical feed systems. If the utility sent you a letter, you’re on their list.
Will you have to shut our water off?
Briefly, usually about half an hour for a standard test. We’ll agree on the time with you before the visit.
